Replacing Cruiser Bike Exhausts

Cruiser motorcycles, including Harley-Davidsons, Honda Shadows, Kawasaki Vulcans and Yamaha Raiders come with stock OEM exhaust systems that are quieter and less powerful than aftermarket exhausts due to industry regulations concerning motorcycle decibel levels. However, replacing the OEM exhaust with a full system exhaust is not hard to do and when you're done your cruiser motorcycle will have a full, throaty growl that will fit the style of the bike.

Unlike street bike slip-on exhausts a full system exhaust replacement requires more time and may require removing specific parts from the bike to allow for a smooth installation. It is recommended that you assemble the full system exhaust away from the bike first so you can make sure all the parts fit together properly and also to remove any burrs from the joints that will be inaccessible once the system is in place.

Though it isn't mandatory many motorcycle enthusiasts and mechanics will recommend you replace the gaskets when you install a new aftermarket full system exhaust. Securing an air-tight fit is not always possible and old gaskets with a new exhaust can lead to gas leaking which in time can cause permanent damage to the bike engine.

Cruiser bikes have the option for adding chrome drag pipes to enhance the full exhaust system. But if you are replacing a stock OEM exhaust with an aftermarket performance exhaust you will need to adjust the carburetor and have a trained technician remap the fuel injection system to accommodate for the new pipes. If this step is overlooked the bike will not perform as well and possible engine damage can occur.

If it looks like the project is too difficult it's best to stop and tag in a trained mechanic who specializes in motorcycles to finish the job. You will also want the bike tuned up after replacing the exhaust so taking the cruiser motorcycle to a credible mechanic is inevitable. After the exhaust is replaced it is recommended that you check the system again after riding for a few miles to check that all parts are intact and nothing is leaking.
